“My work focuses on representing the connections I feel around me, whether that be between nature, my relationship with my partner, my feelings, the places or the people I've encountered. Bringing together elements to form something transcendent, disconnected from time.”

James John Midwinter is a multidisciplinary artist working in Cornwall, UK. His practice is a continual search for balance, between vibrant emotion and a sense of control and calm. Each piece is a response to small moments within his life, relationships and nature.

“For a long period of my life I wasn’t in touch with my emotions, and who I wanted to be. Understanding and communicating how I’m feeling in the moment is often quite difficult for me, and only on later reflection can I piece together my emotional landscape.  My art practice helps this process greatly.”

His work explores analogue printing in its many forms — from cyanotypes and darkroom prints to photopolymer etchings, screen prints, and hand-brushed silver gelatin on washi paper.

He is also interested in the book as a handmade piece of artwork in itself. He sees his books as a way to develop his skills, and explore craftsmanship. The journey he goes on while making them, and their final form are just as important to him as the photographs within them.

His prints and books explore the relationship between precision and imperfection. He is deeply inspired by the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, and this is reflected in the subtle variations and nuances within each work. Edges appear worn, inks bleed slightly in places, brush marks permeate the surface of a photograph, paper is delicately stained, all creating a nostalgic, time worn aesthetic.

“I hope that these choices remind the owners of the works that they were made with care, with simple materials, by the artists hand.”
